I haven’t thought about my mother and her grandfather in a bit. But, a few weeks back when my niece, who is kicking butt in school, told me she wants to work in the women’s prison system helping the underserved. It made me think of my great-grandfather, Theodor Fliedner. He was a German minister who founded Lutheran deaconess training, a non-ordained ministry for women to provide care, for other women. He understood that women prisoners often had no place to go upon their release, so he opened a hospital and school where they where taught theology and nursing skills. This became a movement and when he died there where over 30 of these schools all around the world. It was the start of organized nursing.
Eventually the women who came to study, came outside the prison system, and the most famous student who graduated was Florence Nightingale. So it’s kinda cool that one of descendants wants to follow a bit in his foot steps. He’d probably roll around in his grave if he knew one of his other descendants, thought the way to lift herself up, was by spreading quality p*ssy jokes across the land. What can I tell you, that Okie gene is strong in me.

Pride all around the family...that is a hell of a legacy to live up to. But as John Milton's sonnet famously concludes: "They also serve, who do stand-up great."
ReplyDeleteI think I have that right.
