My first attempt at homemade Banana/Toblerone ice cream ROCKS! It is the first phase of my "Carmageddon" dessert I'm planning for my bbq this sunday. Next phase will be an almond cake, followed by flambeed strawberries in a Makers Mark caramel sauce. Like Carmageddon itself, you'll either hunker down and slug your way through the pile up - or flee from it.
IT IS SOOOOO GOOD! I can't believe I hit a home run so quickly.
I made this while my friend Wendy stopped by with her laptop to borrow some internet. Within minutes she had ice cream smeared all over her face from licking the spent bowl. She looked like a twelve year old girl.
I bastardized a recipe I found.
1 can condensed milk (1cup) - Recipe called for 2 cans - but I thought that would be too sweet.
1 cup half and half - replaced the cup of condensed milk with this.
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 tbs Maker's Mark - They said Rum
3-4 frozen ripe bananas - They wanted 1 teaspon banana extract, but I thought it would taste icky and fake. They didn't even have bananas in recipe.
1/2 regular size Toblerone chocolate bar coarsely chopped - My idea, at first Wendy and I thought it didn't need it, but since it's a light milk chocolate, it adds without competing. And since I've had a about 7 servings, I would say it stays!
1/2 teaspoon espresso powder - they asked for cinnamon. I might add 1 teaspoon espresso powder next time.
1/2 vanilla bean scraped - next time I might scrape one whole bean. This was the biggest reason for success! The combo of fresh vanilla bean, banana and cream - can't be beat!
Freeze bananas then peel and squish with potato masher. leave some bigger chunks as they are delicious when it hits your mouth.
mix all liquids and vanilla, whisk everything together cept Toblerone and espresso powder, pour over semi frozen bananas, stir - then toss into ice cream maker. At the very end add Toblerone and espresso powder.
Wrap up and freeze.
